Building ASEAN Identity on a Transnational Dimension
7 - 8 March 2013
U Thant Hall, UNU Tokyo, Japan
The Symposium Building ASEAN Identity on a Transnational Dimension addresses the need for such in-depth discussion on ASEAN identity, as one of the foundations for East Asia Community. Selected experts from ASEAN and the Dialogue Partners (Australia, China, the EU, India, Japan, Republic of Korea, New Zealand, Russia, United States) will present papers, and an audience of academics, diplomats, civil society, private sector and media is invited to comment and question. The aim of the Symposium is to investigate and understand the way in which cultural characteristics in South East Asia were established and developed, to reveal linkages between local and transnational dimensions. It will attempt to debate both points of difference and aspects of similarity, to address how the evolution of cultures, religious ethics, social education can build elements of a fundamental nation-ology, a scientific background to understand national identities in ASEAN countries, a pre-requisite for forming an integrated ASEAN community.
