Natural Disasters and Climate Change: Economic, Legal and Institutional Issues

2 September 2009 UNU-IAS
Summary of Event:

Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in the perceived damage caused by natural disasters, which have raised awareness of the need to further improve our understanding and how to mitigate the effects of these events. Although not all disasters can be attributed to climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its 4th Assessment Report highlights the role of anthropogenic factors in influencing future climate, which could lead to detrimental economic effects on human societies.

The United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies (UNU-IAS) convened a seminar on Wednesday, 2 September 2009 from 10:30 to 13:00 at UNU-IAS to discuss possible economic and legal effects of natural disasters and highlighted the need for improvements in the institutional capacity regarding disaster management.
